Kavya Shivashankar an aspiring neurosurgeon from Kansas is top speller

Friday, May 29, 2009

It's safe to say the best is yet to come for the new national spelling champion. She's only just become a teenager. She'll probably keep her competitive juices flowing by entering the International Brain Bee, the perfect contest for an aspiring neurosurgeon.

"But I don't think anything can replace spelling," Kavya Shivashankar said. "Spelling has been such a big part of my life."

On her fourth and final try, the Kansas girl who flashed a sweet smile with every word won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, outlasting 10 other finalists to take home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes and, of course, the huge champion's trophy.

"The competitiveness is in her, but she doesn't show that," said her father, Mirle Shivashankar. "She still has that smile. That's her quality."

Kavya became the seventh Indian-American in 11 years to claim the title, including back-to-back winners who want to be neurosurgeons. Her role model is the one who started the run: 1999 winner Nupur Lala, who was featured in the documentary "Spellbound" and is now a research assistant in the brain and cognitive sciences lab at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Kavya, from Olathe, Kan., was an obvious favorite, having finished 10th, eighth and fourth in her three previous appearances. Her winning word was the proper adjective "Laodicean," which means lukewarm or indifferent in religion or politics. As with all her words, Kavya wrote the letters in the palm of her hand with her finger as she called them out.

"This is the moment we've been waiting for; it's a dream come true," Mirle Shivashankar said. "We haven't skipped meals, we haven't lost sleep, but we've skipped a lot of social time."

One way the family plans to make up for it will be a belated celebration of Kavya's birthday. She was too busy preparing for the bee to make a fuss over turning 13 last week.

Second place went to the only finalist yet to become a teenager. Twelve-year-old Tim Ruiter of Centreville, Va., matched Kavya word-for-word until he misspelled "Maecenas," which means a cultural benefactor.

"I had absolutely no clue about that word," Tim said. "I was just racking my brain for anything possible that could help me. I'll probably be spelling it in my sleep tonight."

Aishwarya Pastapur, 13, from Springfield, Ill., finished third after misspelling "menhir," a type of monolith.

The 82nd annual bee attracted a record 293 participants, with the champion determined on network television in prime time for the fourth consecutive year. This year there was a new humorous twist: Organizers turned the sentences read by pronouncer Jacques Bailly into jokes.

"While Lena's geusioleptic cooking wowed her boyfriend, what really melted his heart was that she won the National Spelling Bee," Bailly said while helping explain a word that describes flavorful food.

Then there was this gem, explaining a room in an ancient Greek bath: "It was always a challenge to tell whose toga was whose in the apodyterium."

But the laughter turned to shock when the speller, Sidharth Chand of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., flubbed the word, spelling it "apodeiterium." Sidharth was last year's runner-up and a favorite to take the title this year. He buried his head in his hands for about a minute after he took his seat next to his parents, while the audience and other spellers gave him a rare mid-round standing ovation.

Among the spectators was Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, who kicked off the championship rounds by telling of a bout with nerves that caused her to drop out of a sixth-grade spelling contest.

"I know that confidence is the most important thing you can give a child," she told the audience.

Maria Sharapova made a Grand Slam comeback

Tuesday, May 26, 2009

Maria Sharapova made a winning return to Grand Slam tennis when she came from behind to beat Belarus's Anastasiya Yakimova 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the first round of the French Open here on Monday.

The Russian former world number one, who underwent surgery on her right shoulder last August and only returned to singles action in Warsaw last week, was contesting her first Grand Slam match since a second-round defeat to countrywJustify Fulloman Alla Kudryavtseva at last year's Wimbledon.

Sharapova, a three-time Grand Slam winner, made a shaky start, double-faulting at break point in her first service game and then conceding another break after rallying to lead 3-2.

The 22-year-old, wearing a blue dress and sporting strapping on her right shoulder, displayed flashes of her characteristically uncompromising groundstrokes but struggled to find any consistency with her serve.

An over-cooked cross-court backhand from the Russian handed Yakimova another break and a 5-3 lead, with the world number 64 Belarusian tying up the first set when her opponent scooped a tired backhand into the net.

Sharapova responded assertively in the second set, breaking twice to race into a 4-0 lead and leveling the match after Yakimova had called for a medical time-out to receive treatment for a back problem.

The Sharapova radar was slightly off-kilter and she earned the ire of the French crowd for questioning a couple of third-set line calls before eventually securing victory to set up a meeting with compatriot and number 11 seed Nadia Petrova.

Facebook as hot last free show in town

Saturday, May 23, 2009

Not that you asked, but I’m here to tell you that once upon a time, in cyberspace, an acquaintance discovered that his relationship with his girlfriend ended.

They were together for almost three years—until two weeks ago, when the girl decided to change her Relationship Status on Facebook from “In A Relationship with x” to “Single,” in full view of about 1000 of their combined friends, and hundreds of other friends of friends.

This she did without telling her boyfriend beforehand, in real life.

My acquaintance found out he was duped after his university professor, who happened to be connected on Facebook, talked to him after class, asking if he was okay, you know, after the breakup. My acquaintance remained calm, took out his mobile phone, and set out to find out what was happening.

“Did you break up with me?” he asked his girlfriend via text, after she refused to answer his calls.

“Yes,” she replied back.

All my acquaintance could do was utter three words created to express incredulity, astonishment and wrath, all at the same time: What the hell.

The funny thing was, before a social networking site sealed the fate of their relationship, my acquaintance didn’t see any sign that things were going bad for the two of them.

Until a few days ago, when I set out to research for this article my editors assigned to me, I have never spoken more than 1,000 words to that guy, just as I have never met everyone on my friends list.

Portal to the soul

But on some level I know these people intimately. They place their profile, personal info, relationship status, life updates online and open them up for the world to see. And a status—160 characters, max —with its limited makeup, its potential to boost and slur, its tumble of particulars, is nothing if not a portal to the soul.

Here’s another: One fateful afternoon, a co-worker’s close friend and his fiancée called their engagement off, but decided not to tell anyone about it first. That same night, the guy couldn’t help but naively delete his “Engaged to x” Relationship Status on Facebook.

I say naively, because he had no idea that editing his status would be akin to sending a mass telegram to the universe announcing that HEY I’M NOT GETTING MARRIED ANYTIME SOON.

His phone, and his ex-fiancée’s, wouldn’t stop ringing for the next few days—their close friends, colleagues, parents, all asking what the hell happened.

I don’t know much about these people, but through Facebook, I feel as if I’ve entered their houses, touched their countertops and peeked inside their linen closets. I don’t know why I continue to surf and read, only that I can’t remember a time when these personal details of strangers didn’t fascinate me.

Facebook’s news feed application, which allows you to read through your friends’ updates, is a form of entertainment, a movie we can virtually enter. But it’s more than that. It’s also a slightly snoopy habit we have no interest in breaking.

With each new day come new statuses that we read in our minds as if they were recitations. The text may be dryer than dry, but we still lap it up: Relationship Status: Single. Interested in: Women. Looking for: Networking. Political Views: Democrat. Religious Views: Protestant.

Awesome. Two thumbs up. Now this is entertainment.

Second life

I’ve met more people who spend more time on Facebook than they do outside their houses, people who know more online strangers than real-life friends. When a social networking site stops being about networking and becomes a form of life on its own, the soul’s very own couture succumbs to reading about other people’s prosperities and, well, trash.

No matter what, in Facebook, we all just have to look. Even after a hundred times, you still haven’t gotten enough. It’s the last free show in town.

A social networking site has turned into our second lives. When before, it was merely an edited reflection of our real lives, today it encroaches on the most private bits of our private lives. A virtual space where the most personal thoughts are carelessly declared to the world. Where a relationship is validated, or otherwise, by simply changing a status.

“When you get past the voyeurism and the envy,” a friend told me while I was in the middle of writing this piece, “when the dimensions of Facebook’s browser become less important than the dimensions of your imagination, that’s when all of it ceases to fascinate.”

Or at least we can tell ourselves that. Two days ago, while walking on a palm tree-lined street on the way to work, I bumped into a girl whom I went with to college. She told me that one of our friends, who was unfairly judged as the one who’d be single forever care of the pigeon-holing game called Human Bingo that we once played in class, just changed her Relationship Status from “Single” to “Married.”

My friend looked down at the street and let out a sigh that swirled around the empty lots like a ghost.

“It gives you something to live for,” she said. “It tells you that anything is possible.”

I smiled and nodded, and we stood together under a shaft of light and talked about the beauty of the trees, the peacefulness of the street, and the crisp sunniness of the day.

American Idol Season 8 Wacky 'Idol' Finale Live | Watch American Idol Season 8 Wacky Matchup 'Idol' Finale Live

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Top 2 finalist Lambert-Allen match-up may be a wacky 'Idol' finale in all new American Idol Season 8 Finale.

The final "American Idol" performance episode could be the weirdest concert ever televised.

In one corner, there's over-the-top Adam Lambert, the dominating presence who transformed Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" into a sitar-infused spectacle and tackled "Whole Lotta Love," the first-ever Led Zeppelin tune performed on Fox's "Idol." From the outset, he's been the ambiguous rocker next door, most comfortable — but
Publish Post
not scary — in eyeliner and studded leather.

Then, there's Kris Allen, always at home in jeans with his guitar. The only fashion risk he's taken is that smidge of blue nail polish spotted on his thumb during a visit home to Conway, Ark. Allen garnered the most praise with his daring song choices, like singing "Falling Slowly" from indie musical "Once" and reinventing Kanye West's robotic "Heartless" as a wistful singer-songwriter joint.

"Kris' appeal is that he has an honesty and a sincerity when he performs, and that he has never tried to change who he is," said judge Kara DioGuardi. "He's like a steady ship in the night. He never changes his clothes because everybody else around him is. He never does a song in a way that is sort of overcooked because everyone else around him is."

The mixture of Allen's subtly and Lambert's showiness — only to be broken up with a performance by fourth-season champ Carrie Underwood — will likely make for a kookier-than-usual show Tuesday, especially considering that Allen's slot in the final two has been perceived as a come-from-behind victory for the 23-year-old college student.

"It's going to be a strange and interesting juxtaposition on Tuesday night," said Michael Slezak, who blogs about "Idol" for Entertainment Weekly magazine's Web site. "Kris and Adam are so different. Calling them apples and oranges doesn't go far enough. They're almost from different planets. It's like comparing a root vegetable to a sea creature."

If there's anything they have in common, it's consistency.

The only time the men were in the show's dreaded group of bottom-three vote-getters was after their Rat Pack-themed performances, yet Lambert has long been considered the front-runner. After host Ryan Seacrest revealed last week that only 1 million votes separated Allen from the 27-year-old theater actor, the competition could be closer than expected.

"These guys have been doing a great job already, so I don't have much to tell them except to be true to themselves and really engage the home viewers through the cameras," advises sixth season runner-up Blake Lewis. "As far as finale week goes, they just need to stay focused and try to balance themselves through the chaos. It's really stressful."

The winner's fate may lie in the dialing fingers of the fans who had been supporting Milwaukee church music director Danny Gokey — and keeping him out of the bottom three until his dismissal last week. DioGuardi believes that Tuesday's episode "will be about forming a connection with the audience, and it's really about who's gonna get those Danny votes."

Still, most imagine the "Idol" title is Lambert's for the taking.

"I think this is going to be a walk in the park for Adam," said Rickey Yaneza, who blogs about "Idol" at Rickey.org. "Judging from the traffic on my site, everyone is more interested in Adam. Kris simply can't compete with Adam's vocal calisthenics. Kris just has to be himself. Wow. That sounds like something Paula Abdul would say, doesn't it?"

How to Train for the Best American Jobs | Best Hot American Jobs

Tuesday, May 19, 2009

White and blue-collar jobs alike have felt the sting of outsourcing in recent years, as companies send jobs overseas to countries where the labor can be performed more cheaply. There are plenty of excellent professions that are not going anywhere, and in fact are expected to grow considerably over the next seven years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Below are some of the best, in terms of salary and job growth, along with information about how to train for these careers.

Education Administrator, Elementary or Secondary School

While online education is an increasingly popular option for college-level students, younger students still need live teachers, and live teachers require supervision by education administrators.

Career Training: A master's degree in education administration or educational leadership, plus related experience in a field such as teaching or school administration, is the most common route to becoming an education administrator.
Average Annual Salary: $82,120.
Job Outlook: 12 percent growth is expected between now and 2016. Some of the most secure jobs will be for public school administrators, since public schools are funded by public tax dollars.

Physical Therapist

Health care jobs are a great bet for job safety in terms of outsourcing worries. Not only is health care the largest industry in the US, employing over 14 million people in 2006, but it deals with a population that needs hands-on, personal care.

Within health care, physical therapists are essential. An increasing elderly population, new technology in the field, and longer life expectancies of disabled patients are all contributing factors to this important and quickly growing profession.

Career Training: A master's degree in physical therapy and state licensure is a requirement for most physical therapists. The master's degree program for physical therapists usually takes two years.
Average Annual Salary: $71,520.
Job Outlook: Much faster than average job growth is expected, at 27 percent between now and 2016, says the BLS.

Sales Manager

A lot of jobs can be performed overseas, but when it comes to selling merchandise, American companies still need teams of salespeople selling their products in-person, as well as managers to oversee operations. Sales manager positions are highly coveted, but are expected to stay put and even expand over the next several years.

Career Training: A bachelor's or master's degree in business administration with an emphasis on marketing is the surest route to success. Many sales managers work their way up the ladder, starting as sales clerks or assistant managers.
Average Annual Salary: $106,790.
Job Outlook: 12 percent growth is expected between now and 2016, according to the BLS.
Computer and Information Systems Manager

While it's true that some computer-related jobs may be threatened by outsourcing, more complex jobs like this one can't be as routinely trained and shipped overseas. Computer and information systems managers will remain necessary because technology in the workplace is only expected to rise in coming years, and managers will always be needed to oversee it.

Career Training: A bachelor's degree is often required, and some employers even prefer a master's. An MBA with technology is especially desirable. Training in information technology or computer information systems management will help put you on the right track.
Average Annual Salary: $113,880.
Job Outlook: This profession is expected to grow by 16 percent between now and 2016, or "faster than average".

Automotive Service Technician or Mechanic

This job requires more technical knowledge than it used to in the days of simpler cars and automotive technology. For this reason, the term "mechanic" is quickly being replaced by the term "automotive technician."

Career Training: Auto technicians must keep abreast of the latest automotive technology, making a formal training program extremely advantageous to those looking to enter the field. An associate's degree or certificate in automotive technology can be a great way to get started.
Average Annual Salary: $36,480.
Job Outlook: As more Americans look to repair the cars they already own instead of buying new ones, auto technicians and mechanics are expected to increase by 14 percent, higher than the average 10 percent for most professions.

If you're worried about the future of your career, consider transitioning to a field where the jobs are more likely to stay put. The right training and education can help you transition to a field where jobs are growing instead of shrinking.

UNICEF: Philippines to reduce maternal deaths

The UN children's agency urged the Philippines to do more to reduce the high rate of maternal mortality in the Southeast Asian nation.

UNICEF country representative Vanessa Tobin, on a visit to a Manila hospital where she saw babies being delivered, said the agency was puzzled why one woman dies every two hours due to complications from pregnancy and childbirth.

"We need to understand why despite the available health care services, many of our pregnant women choose to deliver without the proper care of skilled health workers," Tobin said in a statement released to journalists accompanying her on the tour.

Data from a 2009 UNICEF report shows a Filipina mother has a one in 140 chance of dying while delivering a child, compared with one in 8,000 in industrialised countries.

This translates to around 11 mothers dying every day or 4,500 a year due to pregnancy and childbirth complications.

Also, it said about half of the deaths of Filipino children under the age of five happen within the first four weeks of their lives.

"The health and survival of mothers and their newborns are linked, and many of the interventions that save new mothers' lives also benefit their infants," Tobin added.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque said the government was "mobilising our resources to improve services especially for pregnant women and newborns" and encouraging local governments to provide facilities to complement those funded by the national government.

Angels and Demons Review

Blessedly, "Angels and Demons" is more entertaining and less self-serious than its predecessor, the dense and dreary yet enormously successful "The Da Vinci Code."

In adapting another of author Dan Brown's religious-mystery page turners, director Ron Howard wisely gave in to its beat-the-clock thriller elements, which makes for a more enjoyable summer movie experience. The brouhaha has long since abated among Catholics, albinos, "Da Vinci Code" purists, what have you, and all that's left is air-conditioned escapism.

But its twists, turns and revelations are just as ridiculous as those in the first film _ perhaps even more so _ and it breezes through arcane details with just as much dizzying speed.

Besides Howard, the key players are back from that 2006 international hit, including Tom Hanks as Harvard professor and symbologist Robert Langdon and Akiva Goldsman as screenwriter (with David Koepp collaborating on the script). Joining them are Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgaard and Armin Mueller-Stahl among the estimable supporting cast, all of whom have enjoyed the benefits of stronger material but manage to supply gravitas nonetheless.

Although "Angels and Demons" preceded "The Da Vinci Code" in book form, the film is positioned as a sequel to take advantage of the strained relationship between Langdon and the Vatican _ only this time, it's his expertise the folks there reluctantly need.

With the pope dead and the College of Cardinals about to meet in conclave to choose a replacement, a secret society known as the Illuminati has kidnapped the four likeliest candidates. Howard and cinematographer Salvatore Totino, who also shot "The Da Vinci Code," cloak all these proceedings in dark, ominous shadows, and Hans Zimmer's score rather obviously adds to the feeling of foreboding.

Langdon is brought in to decipher clues at various churches and historical sites throughout Rome to prevent the killing of the cardinals, one every hour, leading to a bomb explosion at the Vatican. He gets help along the way from Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), an Italian scientist who worked at the lab where the combustible vial of anti-matter was stolen for the planned attack. Her arrival also allows for such standard action-picture dialogue as, "Can you deactivate the device?"

Never mind that Vittoria is sexy and mysterious, not middle-aged and frumpy. (And we gotta say, Hanks is looking pretty good here, too. The first time we see him, he's tanned and trim, swimming laps in a Speedo in the Harvard pool.) Never mind that the time frame is impossible _ that they must dash across the city at night, with its narrow streets and tourist traps packed with visitors, in time to stop each killing. And never mind that one person appears to be responsible for orchestrating these elaborate and very public deaths.

But wait, we haven't even gotten to the most laughable part of the story yet! We won't give it away entirely for those who haven't read the book. We'll just say it involves an exploding helicopter and a crucial character parachuting out of it just in time. Because it is summer, after all, despite the aura of religious solemnity.

"Angels & Demons," a Columbia Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence, disturbing images and thematic material. Running time: 138 minutes. Two stars out of four.

Happies people in America

Sunday, May 17, 2009

Americans grow happier as they age, surveys find. And a new Pew Research Center survey shows the tendency is holding up as the economy tanks.

Happiness is a complex thing. Past studies have found that happiness is partly inherited, that Republicans are happier than Democrats, and that old men tend to be happier than old women.

And even before the economy got nasty, seniors were found to be generally happier than Baby Boomers. Some of that owes to the American Dream being lived by past generations, while Boomers work two jobs and watch the dream whither.

In times like this, it's clear how age can have its advantages. While not all seniors are weathering the recession well, for many the impact is much less severe than it is for younger people.

Why? Many people 65 and older retired and downsized their lifestyles before the economy imploded, according to Pew analysts. Most aren't raising kids and many are not so worried about being laid off. Loss of income can be, of course, a source of stress and displeasure. (While money doesn't buy happiness, a study in February showed cash can help, especially when people use it to do stuff instead of buy things.)

If you're thinking that Republicans are happy just because they perhaps make more money, that does not seem to be the case. The study that found Republicans to be happier than Democrats also showed that it held true even after adjusting for income.

It's those age 50-64 who've "seen their nest eggs shrink the most and their anxieties about retirement swell the most," the Pew survey found. It also finds that younger adults (ages 18-49) "have taken the worst lumps in the job market but remain relatively upbeat about their financial future."

Not everyone in any category is blissful, of course. Other research has shown that happiness in old age depends largely on attitude factors such as optimism and coping strategies. Add financial planning to the list.

In the new Pew telephone survey, taken in March and April of 2,969 adults, here's how many respondents in each age group said they had cut back on spending in the past year:

* 18-49: 68 percent
* 50-64: 59 percent
* 65+: 36 percent.

And is the recession causing stress in your family?

* 18-49: 52 percent
* 50-64: 58 percent
* 65+: 38 percent.

Now for the good news: A study in January found that key groups of people in the United States have grown happier over the past few decades, while other have become less so. The result: Happiness inequality has decreased since the 1970s. Americans are becoming more similar to each other on the happiness scale.

Maxim 2009 top 10 most beautiful women

Thursday, May 14, 2009

For the first time, a First Lady makes the cut: Michelle Obama debuts at No. 93. Says Maxim, " may be dealing with two wars, an economic meltdown, and a rapidly graying dome, but at least our Commander-in-Chief gets to come home to the hottest First Lady in the history of these United States."

Maxim has unveiled its "2009 Hot 100," the lad magazine's definitive list of the worlds most beautiful women.

Maxim 2009 top 10 most beautiful womenTopping the list: House's Olivia Wilde, whom Maxim editors say they can't stop "drooling over."

List of "Maxim 2009 Hot 100" the top 10 most beautiful women:

1. Olivia Wilde: "We may not know a McDreamy from a McNugget, but when it comes to TV doctors, there is only one who makes our body temperatures rise. We were drooling over the NYC native long before she was injected into Fox's hit medical drama (House)."

2. Megan Fox: "Seriously, do women get more painfully hot than this? Megan Fox has the face of an angel, a body so perfect that God may have carved it out of soap and sex appeal that could melt a unicorn's horn. Plus, we hear she smells like clouds."

3. Bar Refaeli: "If there's any evidence that the Middle East is a land of beauty and wonder Bar is it. The 24-year-old Israeli supermodel with the brain blowing body scorched the cover of the famed Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition."

4. Malin Akerman: "In the dark world of Watchmen, Malin was tasked with one tough mission ... Watchmen wasn't the first time we've seen Malin and it won't be the last. She's got four new flicks on her busy schedule."

5. Mila Kunis: "Mila's combination of exotic beauty and gal-next-door charm would make any sane man forget his ex in three seconds flat."

6. Eliza Dushku: "On-screen in Fox's Dollhouse, she's a lethal hottie who can negotiate a hostage release or recover stolen art for the Greek government. Off-screen she's the show's producer. Eliza, you've delivered a round house kick to our heartstrings."

7. Adriana Lima: "With apologies to Mrs. Tom Brady [Gisele], it's Adriana who epitomizes the Brazilian bombshell; her killer curves, ridiculous sexiness, and adorable accent make this supermodel the hottest native of a country stupid with smoking hot women."

8. Rihanna: "Pop's reigning princess has had a year of wild highs and lows. Rumor has it, she's in the studio recording her fourth album. We're dancing already."

9. Jordana Brewster: "This breathtaking daughter of a Brazilian swimsuit model and granddaughter of a Yale University president is the real reason the entire world went to see Fast & Furious."

10. Jennifer Love Hewitt: "Ever since she uttered her first 'Bailey!' on Party of Five, Love has been the object of many a man's obsession. She left us high and dry for a bit, but her return to the tube on Ghost Whisperer gives us our weekly fix of Love... and needy dead people."
