Are you a Facebook addict?

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

Psychologists are now probing a new kind of addiction called Facebook Addiction Disorder (FAD).

Psychologist Dr. Michael Fenichel, who has published numerous writings on FAD online, describes it as a situation in which Facebook usage "overtakes" daily activities like waking up, getting dressed, using the telephone, or checking e-mail.

"The amazing thing is that, like cellphones, nobody seems to notice the vast amount of time and energy - at work, at home, and now while on the move - people are devoting to Facebook. It has become a given," Fenichel writes in an online post titled "Facebook Addiction Disorder- A New Challenge?"

FAD could be classified under the more broad "internet addiction disorder" or internet overuse.

Academic papers have already posed theories on internet addiction and social networking addiction, and even less, cellphone addiction.

"Like most activities, moderation and integration are key. Those that may seriously label and treat FAD as a behavioral addiction will clearly need to use context in determining if a behavior has become demonstrably harmful to overall social, work, or face-to-face interpersonal efficacy," Fenichel added.

You are a Facebook addict if...

According to Joanna Lipari, a clinical psychologist at the University of California, Los Angeles who was interviewed for a CNN report, here are some signs that you are addicted to Facebook:

1. You lose sleep over Facebook. When using Facebook becomes a compulsion and you spend entire nights logged on to the site, causing you to become tired the next day.

2. You spend more than an hour a day on Facebook. Lipari said it is difficult to define how much is too much when it comes to Facebook usage, but that an average person need only spend half an hour on the site.

3. You become obsessed with old loves or exes you reconnect with on Facebook.

4. You ignore work in favor of Facebook. This means you do not do your job in order to sneak time on Facebook.

5. The thought of getting off Facebook leaves you in cold sweat. If you try going a day without Facebook and it causes you stress and anxiety, this means you need help.

According to the same report by Elizabeth Cohen, Senior CNN Medical Correspondent, Facebook addiction is not yet an actual medical diagnosis.

However, the report notes that several therapists in the United States have noticed a rise in the number of clients who get hooked on social networking, to the point of social dysfunction.

Facebook fun

Facebook, launched by the world's youngest billionaire Mark Zuckerberg, has over 300 million users worldwide, half of whom log on to the site every day.

Further, about 2 billion photos and 14 million videos are uploaded on various Facebook pages a month and about 6 billion minutes are spent on Facebook a day, worldwide.

According to Willis Wee, founder of the social media and marketing blog Penn-Olson.com, this is twice as much time that people spend on Google.

Apple's updated Macs in holidays

Apple Incorporated company looks to build on momentum heading into the all-important holiday season as they introduced the updated Mac computers.

The company refreshed its line of iMac all-in-one desktop computers in a new edge-to-edge glass design and aluminum enclosure. Its price is unchanged at $1,199.

The company's new MacBook laptops are lighter at 4.7 pounds. The MacBook will start at $999, the same price as before.

The Mac mini, Apple's lowest-priced computer at $599, was refreshed, with more speed, storage and memory.

"This finalizes our lineup for the holiday season," said Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook. "I feel great about our position going into it."

Apple's business shows little signs of slowing despite a recession that has pinched consumer spending.

Apple posted fiscal fourth quarter earnings and revenue that blew by Wall Street forecasts. Mac units grew 17 percent in the quarter.

Toyota Motor unveiled Lexus two-seat supercar

Toyota Motor unveiled a new 4.8-liter engine Lexus two-seat luxury supercar, the LFA has a price tag of about $375,000.

Toyota's luxury Lexus LFA
Sales of the muscle machine, which is set to go into production next year, will be limited to just 500 worldwide, the company said, describing it as "ultra-responsive and extremely stable even when taken to the edge."

"The LFA is a supercar, the driveability of which was refined on the Nurburgring circuit in Germany," said Toyota Motor president Akio Toyoda.

The new addition to Toyota's luxury Lexus line uses lightweight materials such as carbon fiber.

It has a V10 petrol engine and boasts a top speed of 325 kilometers per hour (202 miles per hour), with an acceleration of zero to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.7 seconds.

A prototype of the supercar is on display at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the general public on Saturday east of the Japanese capital.

Toyota is also displaying a new version of its electric concept car, the FT-EV II, along with a Prius plug-in hybrid and a lightweight sports car inspired by the iconic Corolla AE86 coupe of the 1980s.

With a low centre of gravity and a special two-liter boxer engine developed by partner Subaru, the sporty FT-86 is said to handle like a race car but with less damage to the environment.

"It is often said that these days young people have drifted away from cars, but I feel that it may not be the customers that have drifted away from cars but us the manufacturers," said Toyoda.

"For this reason I believe it is the mission of automakers to provide the fundamental excitement of automobiles to customers, regardless of the era."

Stephen Gately autopsy results

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Boyzone star Stephen Gately, whose body was found in a house on the Spanish resort island of Mallorca, died of natural causes, according to autopsy results released Tuesday.

A post-mortem showed Gately, 33, an Irishman, died as a result of a pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, the Balearic Islands Superior Justice Tribunal said in a statement.

"The signer of the British group Boyzone died from natural causes, owing to an 'acute pulmonary edema'," the court statement said.

"The autopsy carried out this morning showed there were no signs of violence to the body," it said, adding that Gately's remains could now be flown home.

Gately was found dead on Saturday in a house near Port d'Andratx on the western tip of Mallorca. The singer had gone to Mallorca with his partner Andrew Cowles. The two were wed in a civil union in 2006.

The court said tissue samples from the singer's body would be sent to a laboratory in Barcelona for further analysis, and that unless information contradicting the autopsy result emerged, the investigation would be closed.

The court said Cowles gave a statement at the court in the Mallorca capital of Palma on Tuesday. Other witnesses were also expected to give statements.

Spanish news reports said the two had been out drinking and that the singer had later choked on his own vomit.

Spanish police said they were called to the scene on Saturday afternoon.

The house, situated on an exclusive tree-lined seafront street, overlooks a rocky bay reputed to have some of the best sunset views on Spain's favorite holiday island.

The four other members of the band flew to Mallorca following news of the death.

Boyzone was one of the biggest acts to come out of Ireland in the 1990s. The group was a major hitmaker in Britain and Ireland in the 1990s and announced a comeback tour at the end of last year.

Gately also released several solo singles and appeared in stage musicals. He made headlines when he announced he was gay a decade ago.

News of his death shocked the British and Irish pop world.

Elton John said Sunday that he and his partner, David Furnish, were "stunned by this tragedy."

Pope Benedict XVI canonised five new saints

Monday, October 12, 2009

Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday canonised five new saints, including a man who dedicated his life to lepers in Hawaii and another considered one of the greatest mystics of the 20th century.

Belgium's King Albert II and his wife Paola, Polish President Lech Kaczynski and French Prime Minister Francois Fillon attended the mass in St Peter's basilica.

The pope also canonised Jeanne Jugan (1792-1879) of France, who founded the order of the Little Sisters of the Poor. By the time she died, her institute had 2,500 workers looking after elderly women in 177 homes around the world.

Jugan "is like a light to guide our societies which have still not rediscovered the place and unique benefits" of elderly people, the pontiff said.

"Her charisma is still important, while so many old people suffer multiple poverties and solitude, sometimes even abandoned by their families," he said.

Jozef Damian de Veuster (1840-1889) of Belgium moved to Molokai in Hawaii at the end of the 19th century, where he became known as "the lepers' apostle" for living on a colony for 16 years until he himself died of the disease.

De Veuster's life "invites us to open our eyes to lepers who disfigure the humanity of our brothers," the pope said.

Also canonised were Polish archbishop Zygmunt Szczesny Felinski (1822-1895) and two Spanish monks - a Dominican, Francisco Coll y Guitart (1812-1875) and a Trappist, Rafael Arnaiz Baron (1911-1938).

Baron, considered one of the greatest mystics of the 20th century, died aged 27 while he was a member of the Cistercian Order of Strict Observance.

He died from diabetes after preferring to stay at the monastery rather than with his parents, where medical care would have been easier to come by during the upheavals of the Spanish Civil War.

In April, the pope canonised five Christians, including Father Arcangelo Tadini (1846-1912), Sister Caterina Volpicelli (1839-1894), theologian Bernardo Tolomei (1272-1348) and Gertrude Caterina Comensoli, (1847-1903), all Italian.

The fifth was Carmelite monk Nuno de Santa Maria Alvares Pereira (1360-1431) of Portugal.

Benedict XVI has indicated he intends to slow down the rate of canonisations and of beatifications -- a step towards full sainthood -- in contrast with the prolific rate of his predecessor, John Paul II.

Pope Benedict XVI has canonised 28 new saints since becoming pontiff in April 2005. Jean-Paul II created 482 new saints and beatified 1,338 during his 26 years in office.

Beatification, officially the Catholic Church's recognition that a dead person has entered heaven and can intercede on behalf of those who pray in their name, is a key step towards sainthood.

Pacquiao-Cotto Update: Pacquiao sparing mate Jose Luis Castillo

Former world champion from Mexico spars with Manny Pacquiao tomorrow in Baguio City. With his new sparing mate former WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo heading for Baguio City.

Jose Luis Castillo is now up in Baguio, the former WBC lightweight champion who’s had some great fights with Floyd Mayweather Jr. and the late Diego Corrales.

He flew in the other day but couldn’t proceed straight to the country’s summer capital due to landslides and flooding brought about by Typhoon “Pepeng.”

Wasting no time, Pacquiao ordered that Castillo be flown to Baguio, and the boxer’s friend, Chavit Singson, was quick to lend his 28-seater private plane.

“He just came in today,” said chief trainer Freddie Roach as he enjoyed his day off in chilly Baguio.

“He’ll spar on Tuesday with Manny. I’ll ask him to do three rounds but we’ll be doing seven for the day,” added Roach.

Castillo came in with American super-lightweight Danny Escobar, and should be out on the road today to get their rhythm going.

There were questions on Castillo’s current condition, and whether he’s up to the task to be part of Pacquiao’s training camp will be known tomorrow.

“He says he’s in shape. But I can’t tell you anything until Tuesday,” said Roach, who has watched Pacquiao spar a total of 31 rounds after two weeks.

Castillo fought Mayweather twice in 2002, and came close to winning the first bout. He squared off with Corrales also twice, winning the second by knockout. He also fought Ricky Hatton in 2007 but lost via knockout.

Shawn Porter and Urbano Antillon have provided Pacquiao company in the ring although Roach said the latter could be flying home by Saturday.

Two days ago, Pacquiao sparred seven rounds, and so far Roach is satisfied.

“He dominated both guys yesterday,” added Roach, who also made Pacquiao swim for close to 30 minutes since he skipped running due to the foul weather.

Roach also denied reports that Pacquiao is planning to leave for the United States earlier than the planned Oct. 24 schedule.

“That’s a lie. Whoever said that was lying. I just talked to Manny and it’s still Oct. 24. That’s where it is,” said Roach.

Leaving on Oct. 24 means Pacquiao had gone training in Baguio for five weeks. They arrive in Los Angeles on a Saturday, rest the following day, and head back to the gym Monday.

They will spend two weeks at the Wild Card Gym for two tough weeks, and drive to Las Vegas on Monday of fight week for the final phase of training.

Stephen Gately of Boyzone died

Boyzone singer Stephen Gately died last Saturday, October 10 at the age of 33, while he is on a holiday in Majorca off the coast of Spain.

"Stephen tragically died yesterday whilst on holiday with his partner Andrew in Majorca," the site said on Sunday.

The Boyzone members, including lead singer Ronan Keating, were heading to Majorca following news of the death.

The circumstances surrounding Gately's death remained unclear but (Britain's) News of the World newspaper reported he died after a night out.

Boyzone manager Louis Walsh told the newspaper: "We're all absolutely devastated."

He said: "I'm in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don't know much about what's happened yet... He was a great man."

Speaking to the newspaper late Saturday, band member Shane Lynch said: "Me and the boys are flying out in the morning.

"We just need to get over to where he's passed and work out what we need to do."

Gately, who married his partner Andrew Cowles in a civil union in 2006, sent ripples through the pop music world 10 years ago when he announced that he was gay.

He joined Boyzone in 1993 after answering an advert in Dublin to audition for Ireland's first boyband.

The band went on to enjoy huge success with six number one singles in Britain, but split up in 2000.

They reunited seven years later, but their recent 19-date Better tour failed to fill stadiums, despite offers of free tickets.

Gately also starred in West End musicals in London, including "Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat".

Boyzone lead singer Keating was "completely distraught", the News of the World said, and former Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern paid tribute to Gately, whom he knew, on the BBC's Andrew Marr show.

He said: "The Gatelys are in my own constituency. I know the family, I know Stephen.

"He (Gately) was with us the other night with his boyfriend Andy, he came to my book launch."

Ahern, whose daughter Georgina is married to Nicky Byrne of boyband Westlife, continued: "It's just such a tragedy.

"Boyzone and Stephen, they've all been part of Irish life and far wider than that, the last 15 years, and so successful, so it's a huge, huge tragedy. It's so sad."

Gately last posted a message on his Twitter page on October 6, writing: "Still busy, lots going on. Focusing on finishing my book next so may be quiet here."

British actor and comedian Stephen Fry said on Twitter that he was shocked at the news.

"Just heard the very sad news about dear Stephen Gately. What a dreadful shock. He was loveable and sweet natured and will be hugely missed."

What is Flirtexting?

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Flirtexting is an act of flirting via SMS. Flirtexting is the new language of love. Text in the city is alive and well, it found. But most of the textual intercourse is taking place among the young.

Motorola, the cellphone giant, conducted the survey in connection with the launch of its new Hint QA30 handset. Its other findings about how Canadians use tech gadgets to "hint" at their desires included:

- People 18 to 34 are more likely to use text messaging to "hint" in general. Seventeen per cent would message a hint they have a crush, and three per cent that someone had food in their teeth or that a friend's fly was down.

- French Canadians are more likely to "flirtext" a hint to a crush (16 per cent) than English Canadians (nine).

- Females are more likely to flirtext (12 per cent) than males (eight).

The findings came as no surprise to Debra Goldstein, co-author of the newly released guide Flirtexting: How To Text Your Way to His Heart.

The 27-year-old New Yorker said the idea for the book arose after she and co-author Olivia Baniuszewicz realized how much time they were spending trying to decipher what men's text messages were all about.

They concluded the obvious: Men are more comfortable texting than talking, and women might as well make the romantic best of it.

Texting is taking over as a way to make initial connections. Handled properly, a witty, appropriate, well timed flirtext can lead to dating and beyond.

Boys love to text. Therefore girls need to know how to flirtext. Guys much prefer texting - that's why texting has taken off so much.

When you are out, be out, she says. Don't pay more attention to texting than to your friends and the people who are all around you. Be a good friend. Be a good date.

Arnel Pineda on the Oprah Winfrey show

Arnel Pineda’s turn to impress Oprah Winfrey, one of the world’s most powerful women today.

Pineda and the rest of the members of the American rock band “Journey” recently guested on Oprah to promote the group’s latest album, “Revelation.”

During the show, Journey's Filipino front man could not believe that he was being interviewed by no less than Winfrey herself.

"I'm facing you (Winfrey) right now. You are [one of the] biggest [names] in show business and I'm facing you. It's like… I'm not allowed to be here but I'm here. And I thank God for that," he said.

The show featured Pineda’s journey “from total obscurity to recapturing the voice of one of the greatest bands of our time."

Pineda’s rags-to-riches story has inspired many people around the world. His life story will be made into a film titled "Don't Stop Believing: Every Man's Journey." The biopic will hit the big screen next year.

The Filipino singer was discovered on YouTube by Journey’s guitarist Neal Schon. Jonathan Cain (keyboard), Deen Castronovo (drums) and Ross Valory (bass) were equally impressed when they first watched him on YouTube performing Journey’s “Faithfully.”

Cain said: "Neal contacted us. I checked the YouTube video just like he said. And there he was singing. And I said, 'The guy got great pipes, does he speak English?’ And, ‘How are we going to get him to the stage to check him out?'" Cain said.

Valory said he had “goosebumps surplus” when he first heard Pineda sing.

Castronovo was also blown away by Pineda’s voice. “It was frightening just to hear that voice come out from that little guy. We couldn't believe it. It’s just so strong. And the best part about it was just how humble the man was, how humble human being, beautiful heart."

For Pineda, being part of Journey still feels like a dream.

"I've seen enough pain and poverty in the Philippines. I've never been that big. All I wanted was to be able to get out of it -- the pain and the poverty - and live decently everyday," he said.

He said touring around the world with his band mates is “amazing, unbelievable and fantastic.” “All the superlative words that you can utter.”

He admitted that he felt the pressure when the band played in the Philippines early this year. “There was a big responsibility and thank God I pulled it off.”

And now that he is making lots of money, Pineda said he bought a home for his family and set up his own foundation to help poor Filipinos.

Journey's Manila concert is now available on DVD in the United States.
