King of Pop - Michael Jackson died

The "King of Pop", Michael Jackson who reigned over the music world like no other, died Thursday as he prepared for a comeback bid to vanquish nightmare years of sexual scandal and financial calamity. Micheal Jackson at 50, died due to full cardiac arrest.

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after being stricken at his rented home in Holmby Hills. Paramedics tried to resuscitate him at his home for nearly three-quarters of an hour, then rushed him to the hospital, where doctors continued to work on him.

"It is believed he suffered cardiac arrest in his home. However, the cause of his death is unknown until results of the autopsy are known," his brother Jermaine said. Police said they were investigating, standard procedure in high-profile cases.

Jackson's death brought a tragic end to a long, bizarre, sometimes farcical decline from his peak in the 1980s, when he was popular music's premier all-around performer, a uniter of black and white music who shattered the race barrier on MTV, dominated the charts and dazzled even more on stage.

His 1982 album "Thriller" — which included the blockbuster hits "Beat It," "Billie Jean" and ", cause of " — is the best-selling album of all time, with an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide.

At the time of his death, Jackson was rehearsing hard for what was to be his greatest comeback: He was scheduled for an unprecedented 50 shows at a London arena, with the first set for July 13.

The public first knew him as a boy in the late 1960s, when he was the precocious, spinning lead singer of the Jackson 5, the singing group he formed with his four older brothers out of Gary, Ind. Among their No. 1 hits were "I Want You Back," "ABC" and "I'll Be There."

He was perhaps the most exciting performer of his generation, known for his backward-gliding moonwalk, his feverish, crotch-grabbing dance moves and his high-pitched singing, punctuated with squeals and titters. His single sequined glove, tight, military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses were trademarks, as was his ever-changing, surgically altered appearance.

Astro Boy to come out this year

Thursday, June 25, 2009

The mythical Japanese cartoon character 'Astro Boy' who has captivated generations of young people worldwide, will come out this year as an animated film by British director David Bowers.

"Without a doubt, this experience has been one of greater creative freedom. A lot of my robots, for example, were inspired by pre-Colombian characters," said Luis Grane, the film's Argentine character designer.

The animated feature is based on the popular Japanese cartoon series by Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989), known as the "god of manga" during its heyday in the 1960s.

"The biggest challenge with recreating Astro Boy was the protagonist, because he had to meet the approval of not only the director, but also Tezuka's son," said Grane, who worked for six years at US film studio DreamWorks before collaborating on "Spider-Man 2," "The Matrix" and animation powerhouse Pixar's "Ratatouille".

"Without a doubt, Astro Boy required more time. We had to negotiate with Tezuca's people, the size, the clothes, everything," added Grane.

The Astro Boy film is being crafted at Imagi Animation studios on the outskirts of Los Angeles, where a few scenes were shown to reporters from the project, the largest animated feature undertaking since "TMNT," the 2007 Ninja Turtles blockbuster.

Bowers, of "Flushed Away" fame, said the feature, which debuts on October 23 in the United States and between January and February 2010 in Argentina and Brazil, follows the original story.

"With Astro Boy we're being really faithful to the story, we're working with Macoto Tezuka, Osamu Tezuka's son, who we brought on to make sure we're doing everything right," Bowers said.

"To me it's a family film and like a lot of family films has darker elements, because the story of Astro Boy is pretty sad and dark.

"We worked very, very hard to make sure that it was emotionally, dramatically terrific and as well to be respectful with this important icon for the Japanese culture."

While Bowers and Timothy Harris took just six weeks to complete the screenplay, production has been underway since 2007 in cooperation with hundreds of animators in Hong Kong, who help the team work 24 hours a day.

Like Grane, Spain's Pepe Valencia joined Imagi Animation in 2007 to work exclusively on "Astro Boy," for which he serves as director of photography.

"With fewer technological resources than the major studios, 'Astro Boy' allowed me to create my own style, my own visual language to help bring the same rhythm as an action film, said Valencia, who headed digital design for "The Polar Express," "Monster House" and "Superman".

The cinematographer's technical acumen is on display in "Astro Boy," with scenes showing the protagonist flying at full speed, facing villains or disappearing in the skies, all executed with camera movements often facilitated by meticulous computer work.

"I have not been inspired by anything or anyone in particular. I just wanted to test my new experiences and techniques learned on the job," said Valencia, who is launching his own preview film studio.

The film recounts the beginnings of the boy robot with human feelings who undertakes a journey in search of his identity before returning to futuristic Metro City to reconcile with his estranged creator, genius scientist Tenma, voiced by Nicolas Cage.

Joining Cage in the cast are Kirsten Bell (Cora), Nathan Lane (Ham Egg), Donald Sutherland (General Stone) and 17-year-old Freddie Highmore, known for his title role in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," as Astro Boy.

Smart Communications seeks faster broadband service

SMART COMMUNICATIONS Inc. has tapped a global telecommunications supplier to provide a wireless network that will allow the mobile phone giant to offer faster data broadband service.

Under a new agreement, Ericsson will be Smart’s main supplier of second and third-generation (2G/3G) common core packet data network and will also be one of the main suppliers of the radio access network in the Philippines.

The network will employ the latest HSPA technology to enable Smart to offer the highest possible 3G (WCDMA/ HSPA) speeds available in the world today. Ericsson will also provide services, network design, network deployment, training and system integration to Smart.

HSPA (high speed packet access) refers to 3G networks that support high-speed data downloading and uploading speeds, while WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) is the radio access scheme used for 3G cellular systems that support wideband services like high-speed Internet access, video and image transmission.

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Smart,” Magnus Gall, Ericsson Philippines vice president, said in a statement. “This contract reinforces Ericsson’s technology leadership and will provide Smart with DSL-like data speeds.”

DSL (digital subscriber line) is also a high-speed Internet service that operates over standard copper telephone lines like dial-up service, but is many times faster than dial-up.

“We are launching a much more powerful and more versatile network that will put the power of the Internet in the pocket of Filipinos wherever they go,” said Orlando Vea, chief wireless advisor of Smart.

Ericsson Philippines president and country manager Rajendra Pangrekar said the contract was “a remarkable milestone” for Ericsson as it would enable the firm to launch “a commercial HSPA project in the Philippines with one of the largest mobile operators in the region.”

How to Make Your Home Feel Bigger

Monday, June 22, 2009

5 simple ways to make your home feel bigger.

1. See it, use it: Often, rooms in American homes are located behind staircases or are otherwise hidden from main thoroughfares. "If you can't see a room, you tend not to use it," Susanka says. Leaving one or more rooms unused can make the house feel cramped, since activity is concentrated in a smaller area. "If you can open up the view from the kitchen or the family area to that underutilized space, you will start to use it merely because you can see it," she says. To open sight lines, Susanka recommends building a "framed opening," which is usually a foot or two wider than a doorway, into the wall that's obstructing the view. "If you can't open the wall completely, you can make an interior window instead," she says. "That little strategy by itself will make your house both feel and live bigger."

2. Diagonal view: Another secret to making a house feel larger is opening up what Susanka calls a "diagonal view," or a line of vision that extends from one corner of the house to another. To do this, homeowners may need to remove some segments of the wall that's blocking the line of vision. Once again, you might consider installing a framed opening or an interior window. "It can be a fairly narrow split that allows you to see from one corner to the other," Susanka says. "I've had a lot of people over the years tell me that that little trick has served them extremely well. Their house instantly feels larger because they are able to look along the longest vista that's available."

3. Double duty: Susanka believes that the floor plans of many of today's homes have failed to keep pace with changes in lifestyle. For example, many homes still have formal dining and living rooms. "As a residential architect, I learned from my clients that 85 percent of them literally never used their formal living room and only occasionally used their formal dining rooms," she says. When remodeling or building a home, Susanka suggests combining one living area and a dining area so that the new space can serve both formal and informal functions. "I call it doing double duty," she says. Consolidating will free up space that can be used for something else, such as a home office or a media room. If you are really attached to your formal dining room, consider lining it with bookshelves so it can also serve as a library. "Plenty of people have too many books and no place to put them," Susanka says. "Books are a type of interior décor that can't be beat." If you convert a rarely used room into one that's more suited to everyday use, the entire house will feel more spacious, she says.

4. Get comfortable: Along the same lines, Susanka says that many American homes are decorated with visually appealing but uncomfortable furniture, especially in formal dining or living rooms. "Nobody is going to sit on that furniture," she says. That's one reason rooms with such furnishings often remain empty, which in turn drives a greater share of household activity into a smaller area of the house. Simply find furniture that's both comfortable and functional, Susanka recommends. "If you don't like sitting in it, nobody else is going to like it either," she says.

5. Vary ceiling heights: Many houses built in the past few decades include a great room, which Susanka describes as an open space that contains an informal living room, an informal dining room, and a kitchen. Although such spaces often are expansive, they don't have anything that distinguishes one activity area from another, so the whole space ends up feeling awkward and ill-fitting, she says: "If there is no contrast between spaces, we end up seeing it all as one large, amorphous nothing." In order to establish some contrast, Susanka recommends adjusting and varying the height of the ceilings. "Maybe a lower ceiling over the kitchen, a medium-height ceiling over the dining area, and the tall ceiling over the living space will give the contrast you need to make the area really begin to work together," she says. "It often comes as a surprise that by lowering some ceilings to create a hierarchy of activity places, the whole space actually ends up living larger." Raising a ceiling can be an expensive proposition because it requires changes to the support structure of the house, but "when you lower a ceiling, you are not affecting the structure," Susanka says, "so it is usually quite easy to do."

Kim Jong-Un the next North Korea successor

Kim Jong-Un, the favourite and third son ff North Korea's Kim Jong-il, named as next to his father as successor of North Korea.

North Korea’s enigmatic and ailing dictator, Kim Jong Il, is thought to have made a surprise selection to succeed him as leader of the nuclear-armed, Stalinist autocracy.

Intelligence sources in Seoul said yesterday that — very much against the expectations of South Korean analysis — Mr Kim, 66, had chosen his youngest and favourite son, Jong Un, to take over the all-pervasive family personality cult that controls the country when he is gone.

The potential heir, who is thought to be no more than 24, was educated in Switzerland and is the offspring of of Mr Kim’s third marriage and his supposedly favourite wife — a woman who died five years ago. The reclusive leader is believed to have three children.

In the regular and heated speculation among North Korea watchers Jong Un has been routinely dismissed as a likely successor because of his youth.

Little about his upbringing is thought to make him suited to the task of following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps. If Jong Un does assume control, he will inherit a persistently moribund economy, relations across the Korean peninsula that have plumbed new lows and an agricultural crisis that annually pushes the country dangerously close to outright famine.

Analysts at the Korea Institute for National Unification said that the critical date to watch was the March 8 parliamentary election: one KINU official said that if Jong Un is suddenly given a seat on the powerful National Defence Commission, it will be a sign that he has begun the process to succeed his father. Experts in North Korean propaganda said that the selection of a notably young successor for Mr Kim was a logical step for the regime: the cult surrounding the “Dear Leader” has consistently presented him as vigorous and hearty. If, as many suspect, Mr Kim has suffered a stroke and is rather frail, the only way to present that reality to ordinary North Koreans, said one government source in Seoul, is with his young, vigorous son at his side.

Rumours of the anointment were greeted with scepticism in some quarters, as were suggestions that the political and military hierarchies had been asked to pass the heir apparent’s name down through their ranks to prepare for a handover. In a nation defined by its opaqueness, the succession issue is perhaps the most closely guarded secret and many observers believe that South Korean intelligence scoops on the subject are liable to be flawed.

Others said that the selection of a successor was a natural move for Mr Kim, whose health and grip on power have been matters of intensifying speculation in recent months.

Kim Jong-Un the next North Korea successorThe only known image of Kim Jong-un shows him as a young boy.

International man of mystery:

Jong Un was born to Kim’s third wife, Ko Yong Hi, a former star of Pyongyang’s premier song-and-dance troupe.

Jong Un was reportedly educated at the International School of Berne, which he attended under a pseudonym.

— Since his return to Pyongyang in his late teens, North Korea has kept him shrouded in secrecy. No picture has ever been published or released.

Steve Jobs: Secret liver transplant

Apple's CEO reportedly had an organ transplant. This was a big week for Apple. The computer company debuted its latest shiny toy, the iPhone 3G S. Turns out, there was a lot more going on that consumers didn't know about. The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that Apple's ailing CEO, Steve Jobs, who had taken a break from work to battle pancreatic cancer, had undergone a liver transplant. But here's the real mystery: The surgery happened two months ago. While the company rolled out its latest cool gadget with the usual fanfare, CNN wonders aloud at the timing of such big news about the charismatic leader.

More about Steve Jobs:

Steve Jobs is the CEO of Apple, which he co-founded in 1976. Apple leads the industry in innovation with its award-winning Macintosh computers, OS X operating system, and consumer and professional applications software. Apple is also leading the digital music revolution, having sold almost 200 million iPods and over six billion songs from its iTunes online store. Apple has also entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.

Steve also co-founded Pixar Animation Studios, which has created eight of the most successful and beloved animated films of all time: Toy Story, A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars and Ratatouille. Pixar has won 20 Academy Awards and its films have grossed more than $4 billion at the worldwide box office to date. Pixar merged with The Walt Disney Company in 2006 and Steve now serves on Disney's board of directors.

Steve grew up in the apricot orchards which later became known as Silicon Valley, and still lives there with his wife and three children.

2012 were the end is coming

This coming fall's "2012," Roland Emmerich taps into the angst of thousands of astrologers, doomsday enthusiasts, and conspiracy theorists who fear that a massive cataclysm will strike the earth on December 21 of that year. Yet unlike previous dates tied to the Earth's expiration, this one has its roots in various sources throughout history including interpretations of the Mayan calendar, astrology, and the ancient Chinese fortune-telling text the "I-Ching."

2012 Doomsday
Here are some interpretations of Earth expiration.

The Mayan Calendar
2012 gained the patina of doom with the best-selling 1966 book "The Maya" by Harvard archeologist Michael D. Coe. He noted that the Mayan culture's famously complex "Long Count" calendar simply ends on 12/21/12, speculating that civilization might come crashing down on that date. Other scholars argue, however, that the Mayan calendar would merely flip over like an odometer that reached 100,000 miles.

Galactic Alignment
Astrologers have also pointed out that during the winter solstice of 2012, the orbital planes of the solar system and the twelve Zodiacal constellations will intersect with the "Dark Rift" -- a black bit of the Milky Way located next to Sagittarius. Some argue this intersection is precisely why the Mayans -- who were brilliant astronomers -- ended their calendar when they did. But other astrologers believe that this conjunction will usher in a great shift in consciousness.

Timewave Zero
And then there's counterculture thinker Terence McKenna, whose Timewave Zero theory -- drawing off of elements from the "I-Ching," the teachings of philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, and modern fractal mathematics -- determined that 12/21/12 is, you guessed it, the exact date of a profound change in world. Roughly speaking, the Mayans, astrologers and McKenna are all predicting global doom or the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.

Sunspots and Pole Problems
So if the apocalypse is set just in time for holiday shopping season three years from now, how exactly will the world end? One theory that actually has some traction in the scientific community is that a solar flare will cause a sudden shift in the magnetic orientation of the Earth's poles, causing all kinds of planetary problems like volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. NASA is predicting strong solar activity around 2012 and there's evidence that the magnetic poles are slowly weakening, something that reportedly presages a reversal. Of course, most scientists think that this reversal will take centuries, not days, to occur.

Few people have destroyed the world more than Roland Emmerich. In his mega-hit "Independence Day," aliens laid waste to pretty much every metropolitan center on the planet, and in his eco-thriller "The Day After Tomorrow," much of the northern hemisphere finds itself buried under ice.

Case of missing cellphone loads

The recent case of disappearing phone loads or pre-paid airtime might have been prevented if local telecommunications companies allowed government to implement stronger rules on consumer protection.

This was pointed out by National Telecommunications Commission Commissioner Ruel Canobas in an interview, as he admitted that telecommunications companies had been blocking the implementation of a memorandum circular that provides guidelines for erring companies.

Senators on Tuesday condemned the country's mobile telecommunications providers for the alleged disappearance of prepaid card credits. A hearing was held by the joint Senate public service and trade and commerce to look into the supposed disappearances of phone credits.

Canobas said NTC Memorandum Circular No. 13-06-2000 was created in 2000 but was actively countered by the telecommunications companies, including Smart Communications and Globe Telecom.

The government rules cover sanctions against erring telecommunications companies, as well as rules that would require people to show identification whenever they’re buying prepaid SIM cards, mandatory billing statements for consumers, prepaid usage and interconnection.

A court injunction was later filed to prevent the NTC rules from being implemented.

Canobas said that the NTC is now seeking the lifting of the injunction.

"We've been fighting the telcos with the MC for years. Hopefully now the case would be discussed," Canobas said.

He said that if the telecommunication firms decide to lift the court injunction, there would be no need for any amendments in the laws governing telecommunications franchise, which is under Republic Act 7925.

New special class of prime discovered through computer

There are only 47 Mersenne primes known, and the newest has nearly 13 million digits.

A computer professional in Norway, with the help of an online computing project, has discovered a new Mersenne prime. This sought-after number represents the 47th Mersenne prime discovered since ancient Greek mathematicians first uncovered them.

These primes are called the "jewels" of number theory, and it takes a huge computing system about two or three weeks to test a single number to see if it could lead to a Mersenne prime.

For those of you for whom basic math is a distant memory, a reminder:

Primes are numbers that are divisible by only the number 1 and themselves. So 2 is prime; so are 3, 5, 7 and so on. The year 2003 was a prime year, and 2011 will be as well.

Mersenne primes are a special class of prime, and they have a particular formula.

The formula for finding Mersenne primes.

The number n is a prime, and the result is prime. And what makes the Mersenne primes so interesting is how rare they are. And their gargantuan size.

Ancient Greek mathematicians were the first to describe Mersenne primes, and, up until now, only 46 had been discovered. This most recent one — though not the largest — is a whopper at nearly 13 million digits long.

Free anti-virus software of Microsoft unveil

Thursday, June 11, 2009

Microsoft Corp is getting ready to unveil a long-anticipated free anti-virus service for personal computers that will compete with products sold by Symantec Corp and McAfee Inc.

Investors are closely monitoring the free service, code-named Morro after Brazil's Morro de Sao Paolo beach, amid concern it could hurt sales of products from Symantec and McAfee, which generate billions of dollars of revenue a year protecting Windows PCs from attacks by hackers.

Three years ago, Microsoft entered that market with Live OneCare, which turned out to be a commercial flop. It announced plans in November to kill that product suite, saying it would launch the free Morro service by the end of 2009.

Analysts said they are looking forward to Morro's beta to see exactly how its features compare to those in products from competitors.

Microsoft has said it will provide protection from several types of malicious software including viruses, spyware, rootkits and trojans.

Officials with Symantec and McAfee have said they do not see Morro as a threat.

"Microsoft's free product is basically a stripped down version of the OneCare product Microsoft pulled from the shelves," said Symantec Consumer division president Janice Chaffin. "A full Internet security suite is what consumers require today to stay fully protected."

Joris Evers, a spokesman for No. 2 security software maker McAfee, said his company is already enjoying strong growth despite competition from free anti-virus products that are on the market.

"On a level playing field, we are confident in our ability to compete with anyone who might enter the marketplace," he said.

A spokeswoman for Trend Micro Inc, the No. 3 player, declined to comment.

Japan robot can cook

Japanese inventors came up with robots that can cook and prepares to take over the kitchen.

Various prototype robo-chefs showed off their cooking skills at the International Food Machinery and Technology Expo in Tokyo this week, flipping "okonomiyaki" Japanese pancakes, serving sushi and slicing vegetables.

Japan has one of the world's fastest aging societies and experts say robots can help care for the growing number of elderly, and fill in for the lack of young people willing to take on jobs as chefs, cleaners or caretakers.

Japan is home to almost half the world's 800,000 industrial robots and expects the industry to expand to $10 billion.

Tomio Sugiura, president of Sugiura Kikai Sekkei, which manufactured the vegetable-slicing robot, saw a robot in every home in the near future.

"Nowadays, almost every family has a car. In the near future, every family would be having a humanoid robot that can help out various things at home," he said.

Carrie Prejean was fired as Miss California 2009

Carrie Prejean has been stripped of her Miss California title due to breach of contract.

Miss California 2009 Carrie Prejean

"The Miss California USA Organization, in conjunction with the Miss Universe Organization and with the blessing of its owner, Mr. Donald J. Trump, announced today the termination of Carrie Prejean as Miss California USA 2009, citing continued breach of contract issues," the Miss California Organization said in a statement to Access Hollywood.

The group kicked the controversial beauty queen from her post due to "contract violations including Ms. Prejean's unwillingness to make appearances on behalf of the Miss California USA organization," the pageant's Executive Director, Keith Lewis, said in a statement.

Last month, Trump decided that Prejean would be allowed to keep her crown despite racy photos of the 22-year-old surfacing on the Internet. But Lewis claims that in the weeks that followed, the beauty queen did not step up to the plate.

clear that Carrie is unwilling to fulfill her obligations under our contract and work together," Lewis' statement continued.

Prejean made headlines when she said in the question-and-answer portion of the Miss USA pageant that she didn't support the right of gays and lesbians to marry. She later claimed that her answer lost her the crown. Miss California pageant organizers soon said that Prejean was making herself unavailable for personal appearances while appearing to work with an anti-gay marriage group and making the media rounds to talk about her stance. Then pictures of a mostly-naked Prejean popped up on the web. Trump stepped in and dismissed the furor over the picture as so 20th century, and said he supported Prejean's right to free speech.

Just as the character, Kwai Chang Caine, roamed the 19th Century American West, David Carradine spent his latter years searching for the path to Hollywood stardom, accepting low-budget roles while pursuing interests in Asian herbs, exercise and philosophy, and making instructional videos on tai chi and other martial arts.

David Carradine was always seeking, both spiritually and professionally, his life forever intertwined with the Shaolin priest he played in the 1970s TV series "Kung Fu."

Carradine was found dead Thursday in Thailand. The 72-year-old actor appeared to have hanged himself in a suite at the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel, said Lt. Teerapop Luanseng, the officer responsible for investigating the death.

"I can confirm that we found his body, naked, hanging in the closet," Teerapop said. He said police were investigating and suspected suicide, though one of his managers questioned that theory.

Carradine had flown to Thailand last week and began work on "Stretch" two days before his death, Smith said. He had several other projects lined up after the action film, which was being directed by Charles De Meaux with Carradine in the lead.

Carradine was "in good spirits" when he left the U.S. for Thailand on May 29 to work on "Stretch," Smith said.

Filming began Tuesday, she said, adding that the crew was devastated by Carradine's death and did not wish to speak publicly about it for the time being.

The Web site of the Thai newspaper The Nation said Carradine could not be contacted after he failed to appear for a meal with the rest of the film crew on Wednesday, and that his body was found by a hotel maid Thursday morning. It said a preliminary police investigation found that he had hanged himself with a curtain cord and there was no sign that he had been assaulted.

Police said Carradine's body was taken to a hospital for an autopsy that would be done Friday.

Carradine appeared in more than 100 feature films with such directors as Scorsese, Ingmar Bergman and Hal Ashby. One of his early film roles was as folk singer Woody Guthrie in Ashby's 1976 biopic, "Bound for Glory."

But he was best known for "Kung Fu," which aired from 1972-75.

Carradine, a martial arts practitioner himself, played Caine, an orphan who was raised by Shaolin monks and fled China after killing the emperor's nephew in retaliation for the murder of his kung fu master.

Pursued by revenge assassins from China, Caine wanders the American West in search of his half-brother Danny. His conscience forces him to fight injustice wherever he encounters it, fueled by flashbacks to his training in which his master famously refers to him as "Grasshopper."

Carradine left after three seasons, saying the show had started to repeat itself.

Forbes most powerful celebrity - Angelina Jolie tops

Angelina Jolie tops Forbes celebrity 'power list'. Superstar actress and humanitarian advocate Angelina Jolie has unseated talkshow diva Oprah Winfrey as the world's most powerful celebrity in a new survey published by Forbes magazine Wednesday.

The top ranking is based on income over the past 12 months as well as web references, press clippings, broadcast mentions and major magazine covers devoted to the celebrity, Forbes said.

Oscar winner Jolie, 33, one half of the Hollywood golden couple dubbed "Brangelina" with Brad Pitt, earned 27 million dollars between June 2008 and June 2009.

Her earnings and "famous face," Forbes said, were enough to dethrone media maven Winfrey, who earned 275 million dollars.

Jolie, who came in third last year, is known for balancing her movie career and work as a goodwill ambassador for the UN refugee agency with her ever-growing six-child family with Pitt.

In third place was pop legend Madonna -- absent from last year's top ten -- whose tabloid antics and hit world tour "Hard Candy" boosted her profile and earned her 110 million dollar, the magazine said.

In fourth place was singer and actress Beyonce Knowles with earnings of 87 million dollars, who was lauded by Forbes for her "multi-platform empire."

The top male power-player Tiger Woods came in fifth with 110 million dollars in earnings. Despite a year beset by injury, the star golfer remained the world's highest paid athlete.

A lucrative touring schedule was enough to catapult rock legend Bruce Springsteen to the sixth spot with 70 million dollars in earnings, and bump director Steven Spielberg to seventh, whose work on the Indiana Jones sequel earned him 150 million dollars.

Actress Jennifer Aniston took the next spot, a cut above her former husband Pitt, with movie hits and tabloid splashes earning her the eighth spot.

With earnings of 28 million dollar, Pitt came in at ninth with his headline-making family life with partner Jolie and a blockbuster turn in "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

Rounding out the top ten was basketball wizard Kobe Bryant, whose first appearance in the upper echelons of celebrity power came thanks to big-bucks endorsement deals after the Beijing Olympics.

Anthemic, soul-searching band Coldplay were the most powerful Brits on the list this year with a debut at the 15th spot, following a sold-out world tour and a smash hit album, "Viva la Vida."

Also debuting, at number 49, was Barack Obama -- the first head of state to hit the Forbes's Celebrity 100.

With his historic election to the US presidency in November 2008, the former Illinois senator and bestselling author became "the most famous person in the world," Forbes said.
